A note on numbering
The stories above are numbered according to the system devised by David Schutte in his invaluable appendices to Mary Cadogan’s excellent The William Companion (Macmillan, 1990; also contributed to by Kenneth C Waller). For the most part the numbers reflect the ordering of the stories in the then-current Macmillan edition.
